Stargazing in the Big Thompson Canyon

Away from city lights, the canyon offers dark skies that live up to this cabin’s name. Clear, moonless nights are best for spotting stars and constellations, often right from your hot tub. Summer and early fall usually bring the mildest nights for staying out late, and Rocky Mountain National Park hosts night sky programs in season.

Rocky Mountain National Park

The park is a short drive past downtown Estes Park, with more than 350 miles of trails, alpine lakes and abundant wildlife. Catch sunrise at Bear Lake, drive the scenic Trail Ridge Road, or join a ranger-led program. Then come back to a fire and a hot soak.

Fly Fishing the Big Thompson River

The Big Thompson runs right through the Rustic River Cabins property. It’s known for brown and rainbow trout, so you can cast a line within steps of your cabin, whether you’re a seasoned angler or a first-timer.

Downtown Estes Park

Just four miles away, Estes Park is full of shops, restaurants and galleries along Elkhorn Avenue. Tour the historic Stanley Hotel, or time your visit for Elk Fest in October or the Wool Market in June.

Wildlife Viewing

Elk, mule deer, wild turkeys, eagles and herons are regular visitors along the river. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to watch, and fall brings the elk rut into the canyon.

Does Milky Way have a fireplace?

Yes. Milky Way has a wood-burning fireplace. Please bring your own firewood and kindling from home, or purchase it in Estes Park on your way in.

Does Milky Way have a private hot tub?

Yes. Your private Hot Springs® hot tub sits right next to the cabin, enclosed by a cedar deck and fence. It’s for Milky Way guests only and is never shared.

How many guests can stay at Milky Way?

Milky Way sleeps a maximum of two people. No extra guests are allowed, including children ages zero to six.

Is Milky Way good for stargazing?

On clear nights, yes. The cabin sits in the Big Thompson Canyon, away from city lights, and the private hot tub makes a comfortable spot to take in the night sky.

How far is Milky Way from downtown Estes Park?

About four miles, roughly a 10-minute drive up the Big Thompson Canyon. Restaurants, shops, the Stanley Hotel and the entrances to Rocky Mountain National Park are all within easy reach.

What’s included in the kitchen?

The kitchen has a refrigerator, a convection microwave and a small four-burner stove, and complimentary coffee is provided. We recommend stocking up on groceries in Estes Park or Loveland before you arrive.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Is smoking allowed at Milky Way?

Smoking is allowed outside only, per Colorado state law, and outdoor ashtrays are provided. Smoking of any kind inside the cabin is strictly prohibited.

Yes. Our Stay Longer, Save More rates discount 5-, 7- and 10-night stays depending on the season. Returning guests can call us for an exclusive rate.
